Project Context:
"Wave Gear" – A high-volume retail simulation. As the Lead Accountant, I managed the company through a pre-opening setup phase followed by three full months of operational activity.
The Objective:
To execute the complete accounting cycle—from analyzing raw source documents to closing the books—while ensuring strict adherence to GAAP standards for inventory valuation and revenue recognition.
My Strategy:
While the simulation provided an automated interface, I built an independent Excel Shadow-Book to record, analyze, and verify every single transaction before entering it into the system.
The simulation introduced complexities that went beyond simple data entry:
Source Document Analysis: Transactions were provided as raw PDF documents (Equity Agreements, Invoices, Receipts) requiring interpretation before entry.
Inventory Valuation: High-Value inventory (Surfboards, Paddleboards) required precise Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) tracking.
Accrual Accounting: Managed significant deferrals, calculating monthly allocations for a $13,500 prepaid rent payment and $6,000 insurance premium.
1. Capitalization & Setup
Analyzed Legal Equity Agreements to correctly record the initial $30,000 capital investment and issuance of Common Stock. Capitalized startup costs (Business License, Logo Design) and established the initial Balance Sheet before operations begain.
2. The Shadow-Book Audit
Maintained a daily General Journal in Excel to track sales and inventory purchases independent of the software. At month-end, I built a 10-Column Worksheet to manually calculate adjusting entries for depreciation, rent expiration, and income tax accruals.
3. Financial Analysis
Beyond compliance, I performed a ratio analysis to benchmark "Wave Gear" against industry standards. I utilized cumulative quarterly data for metrics like Return on Equity (ROE) to ensure the analysis reflected the full operational period rather than isolated monthly fluctuations.
Completed the 3-month simulation cycle with zero discrepancies between my Excel audit models and the system results.
